More than one type of car service?
Yes, although this doesn’t apply to all cars, there is usually more than one level of car service. These are most commonly referred to as an ‘interim’ service and a ‘full’ service. Individual car manufacturers may call them different things (BMW refers to ‘Inspection 1’ and ‘Inspection 2’, for example) but in principle the services are similar and involve the same processes.
Let’s talk about the interim service
An interim service is often required by people who drive a high number of miles, or have a more complex car – such as a high performance car – that requires inspecting more often. During an interim service, a number of visual checks will be carried out on parts that see a lot of use. The mechanics will check fluid levels, see if your lights are working properly, examine your tyre treads, and also look for problems such as leaks.
The mechanic will almost certainly change your oil and top up the other fluids, and may also check extra things like the condition of belts and hoses in the engine bay – and occasionally even the condition of the brake pads.
What makes a full service different?
The full service is a much more thorough check. Most cars get this treatment once a year – or sometimes once every two years, depending on miles covered. Filters are changed, spark plugs replaced, wheels and brakes checked, important mechanical parts like the suspension, clutch, exhaust and driveshaft are inspected, plus you’ll also get fluids changed. It’s also a good time to mention any unusual problems you think you’ve detected to your mechanic.

If you own a very high performance car, or even just a normal car that’s been treated poorly, it may need a major service. In high performance cars this is a process that happens every few years, and could involve tasks such as removing the engine for inspection.
